§01 How to get your data

Ask Meta for your data, politely.

  1. Open Instagram and tap your profile picture (bottom right).
  2. Tap the hamburger menu (≡) top right.
  3. Tap Accounts Center.
  4. Tap Your information and permissions.
  5. Tap Export your information.
  6. Tap Create export.
  7. Tap Export to device.
  8. Tap Customise information and pick only Followers and Following — this makes the export tiny and Meta delivers it in minutes instead of hours.
  9. Set Date range to All.
  10. Set Format to JSON — not HTML.
  11. Tap Start export and enter your password.
  12. Wait for the email from Meta — usually under an hour.
  13. Download the ZIP from the email and drop it here. Don't unzip it.

Non-negotiable JSON format is required. HTML exports will not work — you will have to start over.
